1-Butanol

CAS 71-36-3

Physical and chemical properties

n-Butanol, also known as 1-butanol or butanol, is a type of alcohol. Each molecule has four carbon atoms and its molecular formula is CH3CH2CH2CH2OH. There are three isomers, namely isobutanol, sec-butanol and tert-butanol. It is a colorless liquid with a wine odor at room temperature. Its boiling point is 117.7°C, density (20°C) is 0.8109g/cm3, freezing point is -89.0°C, flash point is 36~38°C, and autoignition point is 689F. Refractive index Chemicalbook (n20D) is 1.3993. Its solubility in water at 20°C is 7.7% (weight), and its solubility in n-butanol is 20.1% (weight). It is miscible with ethanol, ether and many other organic solvents. Its vapor forms an explosive mixture with air, and its explosion limit is 3.7%~10.2% (volume fraction). Butanol is the raw material for producing plasticizer dibutyl phthalate, and is also used to make solvents for butyl acrylate, butyl acetate, and ethylene glycol butyl ether.

Uses

N-Butanol is mainly used to make phthalic acid, dibutyl phthalate, aliphatic dibasic acid and n-butyl ester plasticizers of phosphoric acid, which are widely used in various plastics and rubber products. It is also the raw material for making butyraldehyde, butyric acid, butyl acetate, butylamine Chemicalbook and butyl lactate in organic synthesis. It is also an extractant for the production of melamine resin, acrylic acid, oils, drugs (such as antibiotics, hormones and vitamins) and spices, and an additive for alkyd resin coatings. It can also be used as a solvent for organic dyes and printing inks, a dewaxing agent, etc.
