Uses: Used in organic synthesis and as a dye intermediate.

Production method: Mix 46.5 g (0.5 mol) of aniline, 20 g (0.25 mol) of chloroacetic acid, and 50 mL of water, and heat under reflux for 3 hours. Then, basify the mixture with sodium carbonate solution and remove excess aniline via steam distillation. Subject the residue to reduced-pressure distillation and collect the fraction boiling at 161–163°C (2.13 kPa) to obtain 22–24 g of N-hydroxyethylaniline (yield: 64–70%).
