Benzoyl peroxide is in the form of a white crystalline powder. It has a slight bitter almond smell and is soluble in benzene, chloroform, ether, and slightly soluble in ethanol and water.
Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) has a wide range of uses, mainly including the following aspects:
1. Polymerization initiator: It is a commonly used initiator for the polymerization of monomers such as polyvinyl chloride, unsaturated polyesters, and polyacrylates. It is also used for the graft polymerization of chloroprene rubber, SBS and methyl methacrylate.
2. Cross-linking agent: It is used as a cross-linking agent in the curing of unsaturated polyester resins and the manufacture of organic glass adhesives. It is also a vulcanizing agent and cross-linking agent for silicone rubber and fluororubber.
3. Chemical production: It can be used as a bleaching agent and oxidant. It is used as an auxiliary agent in the production of ion exchange resins and acrylic resins. It is used as a flour improver, oil refining, and fiber decolorization, etc.
4. Medical field:
Used as an auxiliary agent for the production of blood prevention, penicillin, and chloramphenicol.
It can also be used as an anti-acne drug Bansai in the treatment of skin diseases such as acne and blackheads.
5. Other applications:
In glass fiber polyester materials, it accelerates polymerization.
It is used in the production of varnish for unsaturated polyester resins.
In summary, dibenzoyl peroxide has important applications in many fields.
