Diisopropyl ether
Chemical properties:
Colorless, fluid and flammable liquid with medium volatility, with a special ether smell. It can form an azeotrope with water, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, acetonitrile and ethanol.
Purpose:
Diisopropyl ether is a good solvent for animal, vegetable and mineral oils and fats. It can be used to extract nicotine from tobacco. It is also a good solvent for paraffin wax and resin. In industry, diisopropyl ether is often mixed with other solvents to apply to paraffin-based products. Oil dewaxing process. As a solvent, it is also used in pharmaceuticals, smokeless chemicals, coatings and paint cleaning. Diisopropyl ether has a high octane number and anti-freeze properties and can be used as a gasoline blending agent. This product easily forms peroxide and explodes when shaken. Para-benzylaminophenol is often added as a stabilizer. The anesthetic effect of diisopropyl ether is lighter than that of diethyl ether, but the duration of anesthesia is longer.
Production method Industrially, it can be recovered from the by-product of isopropyl alcohol produced from hydration of propylene sulfuric acid. Propylene reacts with sulfuric acid to form isopropyl hydrosulfate, which is then hydrolyzed to isopropyl alcohol. During the reaction, isopropyl hydrogen sulfate and propylene continue to react to form diisopropyl sulfate, which reacts with isopropyl alcohol to form isopropyl hydrogen sulfate and diisopropyl ether. After the sulfuric acid hydration reaction, the Chemicalbook material is stripped with steam in the desorption tower to release isopropyl alcohol and diisopropyl ether from the acid solution. Then, through distillation, diisopropyl ether is first obtained from the top of the tower. In the laboratory, isopropyl ether can be obtained by dehydrating isopropyl alcohol with sulfuric acid, or by hydrogenating isopropyl alcohol and acetone. It can also be formed by the catalytic condensation of isopropyl alcohol and propylene. Diisopropyl ether can also be produced by ion exchange resin method.
