Chemical properties: Colorless and transparent liquid. Melting point 3.5℃, boiling point 242.5℃ (100kPa), relative density 1.1109 (21.2/4℃), refractive index 1.5307 (21℃). It readily reacts with ether and benzene, but does not react with water; it vaporizes with water vapor.
Uses: Used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. Production method: Obtained by condensation of phenol and epichlorohydrin in the presence of sodium hydroxide. Phenol and sodium hydroxide are mixed and stirred until completely dissolved, cooled to 5-6°C, and epichlorohydrin is slowly added. After addition, the mixture is stirred at 25°C for 45 hours. The reaction mixture is extracted with diethyl ether, and the extract is dried over anhydrous potassium carbonate and filtered. The ether is recovered from the filtrate, and the fraction collected at 120-123°C (1.46 kPa) by vacuum distillation is epichlorohydrin phenyl ether.
