Maleic anhydride, also known as “maleic anhydride”, is the anhydride of maleic acid. It is a colorless or white solid with a sour taste at room temperature, with a molecular formula of C4H2O3. Molecular weight 98.06. Needle-shaped crystals are obtained from chloroform or ether. Melting point 60℃, boiling point 82℃ (1.Chemicalbook8665kPa), relative density 1.31460. Soluble in acetone, chloroform, ether, slightly soluble in petroleum ether. Dissolved in water to form cis-butenedioic acid, dissolved in alcohol to form esters, and can react with compounds containing conjugated double bonds to form diene synthesis. Toxic, strongly irritating to mucous membranes.

Uses:

Used as raw material for the production of 1,4-butanediol, γ-butyrolactone, tetrahydrofuran, succinic acid, unsaturated polyester resin, alkyd resin, etc. It is also used in medicine and pesticides.

Production methods

The main production methods of maleic anhydride are benzene oxidation, butene oxidation and n-butane oxidation, but benzene oxidation is still the main method. 1. Benzene oxidation method Benzene undergoes oxidation reaction in a fixed bed under the action of V-Mo-P series catalyst to produce maleic anhydride, and the reaction temperature is 365°C (the reaction bed can also use a boiling bed, but the consumption of Chemicalbook is high). Then it is absorbed with water to produce maleic acid, and then azeotropic dehydration and distillation are carried out, and the finished product is obtained by scraping. 2. Butane (or butene) oxidation method Butane (or butene) is oxidized by air or oxygen under the action of V-Mo catalyst to produce maleic anhydride, and the reaction temperature is 350-400°C. Then it is absorbed by water, dehydrated and refined to obtain the finished product.
