N-Methylformanilide is an organic compound whose chemical name is N-methylformanilide, also known as N-methyl-N-phenylformamide. Its CAS number is 93-61-8, its English name is N-Methylformanilide, and it has many aliases, such as Formanilide, N-methyl- (6CI, 7CI, 8CI) and Methylphenylformamide. N-Methylformanilide is a light yellow liquid with specific physical properties, such as a melting point of 8~13°C, a boiling point of 243~244°C, and a density of 1.095 g/cm³. This compound is soluble in most organic solvents and can be used in a variety of organic solvents. In the laboratory, N-methylformanilide can be prepared by co-heating N-methylaniline and formic acid in toluene. In addition, N-methylformanilide is relatively stable to air and moisture.
The synthesis of N-methylformanilide is of great significance in organic chemistry because it involves the N-formylation reaction of amines, which provides a direct route to the synthesis of formamide compounds with diverse structures. Formyl groups are widely found in natural products and drug molecules. For example, leucovorin, formoterol and orlistat all have formamide structures.
