Chemical Properties:
Pure sodium thiram is a scaly white crystal, extremely soluble in water. Crystals obtained by crystallization contain 2.5 molecules of water of crystallization. It loses 2 molecules of water of crystallization upon heating to 115°C and completely loses its water of crystallization at 130°C. The industrial intermediate is a 15% aqueous solution, a slightly yellow or grass-green transparent liquid with a relative density of 1.06 and a pH of 9–11. Sodium thiram can also be used as a soil disinfectant.
Melting point 120-122°C (dec.) (lit.)
Density 1.17
Vapor pressure 0 Pa at 25°C
Storage conditions 0-6°C
Solubility soluble in water
Form powder crystals
Color white to nearly white
Water solubility 374 g/L at 20°C Hydrolysis sensitivity 0 :
forms stable aqueous solutions
Uses: Used as a terminator for emulsion-polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and SBR latex, an industrial bactericide, a metal precipitant, a vulcanization accelerator for rubber products, and an agricultural insecticide, etc. Sodium thiram, also known as N,N-dimethyldithiocarbamate, is an intermediate for the bactericides thiram, ferrous thiram, ammonium thiram, zinc thiram, and nickel thiram.
Production method: Dimethylaminodithiocarboxylic acid ([79-45-8]) is obtained by the addition reaction of dimethylamine with carbon disulfide, and then salted with sodium hydroxide solution to obtain the final product.
