Tall oil is derived from pine-based oils. It consists primarily of a mixture of oleic acid, linoleic acid, and their isomers, along with small amounts of rosin acids and unsaponifiable matter.
It is capable of undergoing esterification (alcoholysis) and amination reactions. Physically and chemically, tall oil is an oily substance—a mixture of oleic acid, linoleic acid, and their isomers.
It is insoluble in water but soluble in ether and ethanol; it can react with alkalis and undergo esterification or amination.
Due to its low-boiling-point characteristics, it is utilized in various industrial synthesis processes.
In terms of application, tall oil is primarily used to produce oilfield chemicals and ore flotation agents.
It is also employed in the production of dimer and trimer acids, which are used in the packaging industry.
