Polymers and Copolymers: Primarily composed of polymer microspheres of PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) homopolymers or MMA (methyl methacrylate) copolymers. Their production process, microsphere specifications, and ratios are key factors determining the performance differences between various brands. -
Initiator: Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO). It decomposes to generate free radicals, initiating the polymerization reaction. Its concentration affects the polymerization speed. -
Radiopacifier: Such as barium sulfate or zirconium dioxide. It grants the bone cement radiopacity, making it visible under X-ray imaging for intraoperative observation. -
Coloring Agent: Such as chlorophyllin copper. It creates a color contrast between the cement and surrounding tissues during surgery, aiding in identification and cleanup. -
Antibiotic: Some bone cements incorporate antibiotics (e.g., 1.25%-2.5% gentamicin sulfate) for infection prophylaxis.
-
Monomer: The main component is methyl methacrylate (MMA). It is a polymerizable liquid containing carbon-carbon double bonds, which ultimately polymerizes to form solid PMMA. -
Activator: N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (DmpT). Present in very low concentrations, it activates the initiator to catalyze the polymerization reaction. -
Stabilizer: Hydroquinone. Added in trace amounts to inhibit premature polymerization of the monomer during storage, ensuring its stability. -
Coloring Agent: May be similar to the coloring agent used in the powder component.
