Stearamine, also known as octadecylamine or 1-aminooctadecane, is an aliphatic amine compound that is produced in large quantities industrially. It is a white crystalline solid at room temperature.
It is used as an intermediate in organic synthesis to produce octadecane quaternary ammonium salts and various auxiliaries. Examples include thickeners for cationic greases, mineral flotation agents, emulsifiers for synthetic resins, pesticides, and asphalt, antistatic agents for fabrics, wet lubricants, waterproofing agents, surfactants, bactericides, colorants for color photographs, and corrosion inhibitors for oil refining units. It is produced by reacting stearic acid with ammonia to generate octadeconitrile, followed by catalytic hydrogenation under pressure, and further reduction of the enamine.
