To prepare the product, 1 g of KOH catalyst and 24.8 g of dodecanol (as an initiator) are placed into a reaction vessel. The mixture is heated to 85°C at room temperature, followed by 2–3 cycles of evacuation and nitrogen purging to remove oxygen and moisture. The temperature is then raised to 120–130°C, and the reaction monomers—ethylene oxide (EO), propylene oxide (PO), or a mixture thereof—are added according to the desired product structure. Once the reaction is complete, the product is neutralized with 98% concentrated H₂SO₄ and filtered to obtain the final lauryl alcohol polyether. Lauryl alcohol polyethers possess anti-foaming properties. In cosmetics, they can function as antistatic agents and emulsifiers; however, it should be noted that they carry a relatively high risk of causing skin irritation or acne. In industrial applications, Laureth-4 (a specific lauryl alcohol polyether) is a common surfactant frequently used in shampoos, body washes, and hand soaps. In shampoos, its primary roles are to generate foam and cleanse the hair; it also facilitates the penetration and absorption of other ingredients. Furthermore, Laureth-4 can serve as a pharmaceutical excipient—a term referring to chemical substances used during the pharmaceutical manufacturing process, distinct from the active drug ingredients. These excipients are generally inactive components within a drug formulation that enhance stability, solubility, and processability. They can also influence the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) processes of co-administered drugs.
