Azerbaijan began to provide commercial natural gas to Europe through the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline on December 31, 2020. Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov earlier stated that the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline, as another energy link between Azerbaijan and Europe, will strengthen Azerbaijan’s strategic role in energy security, cooperation and sustainable development.

The second-stage natural gas developed by the Shahdeniz gas field in Azerbaijan, located in the Azerbaijani section of the Caspian Sea, is supplied through the South Caucasus Pipeline and TANAP. The initial production capacity of the pipeline is approximately 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, and it is possible to expand the production capacity to 20 billion cubic meters.

The Southern Gas Corridor is an initiative of the European Commission to establish a natural gas supply route from the Caspian Sea and the Middle East to Europe. The pipeline from Azerbaijan to Europe includes the South Caucasus pipeline, the Trans-Anatolian pipeline and the Trans-Adriatic pipeline.
